Fremont to Queen Anne Water Main Replacement Project

Rendering of the project map
The City of Seattle will construct a new water pipe between Fremont and Queen Anne.

Project Description

This project constructed a new 24-inch wide drinking water main inside a utility tunnel that runs underneath the Ship Canal between Fremont and Queen Anne. The new main replaced an existing water pipe that served Seattle for nearly 100 years and was taken out of service in 2011.

Location

The new water main runs underneath the Ship Canal from Queen Anne (near West Ewing Mini Park) and Fremont (near 2nd Ave NW and NW Canal St).

Project Results

In addition to conveying drinking water across the Ship Canal, the new feeder main will:

  • Improve drinking water service levels as far north as Ballard, west to Interbay and Magnolia, and to neighborhoods in the immediate vicinity including the base of Queen Anne hill on the east, north and west side, and Fremont
  • Improve water system pressure and fire flow (the flow rate of water from hydrants used by firefighters)
  • Ensure service reliability in the event other drinking water infrastructure is disrupted

Timeline

Construction began in fall 2018 and was completed in fall 2019.
