What's Happening Now?

Construction at 3rd Ave S and S Main St starts as soon as Friday, December 13, 2024 to create a more enjoyable experience for visitors and commuters.

With this transportation project, we're introducing better sidewalks, new trees and an art installation, improved lighting, a smoother street, and a revamped bus stop. These improvements not only keep buses reliable but make it easier and more pleasant to explore this vibrant neighborhood. Regular email and web updates will begin once work is underway. If you or anyone in your social network want to follow the transformation, sign up to join our project listserv

Our project will:

  • Widen sidewalks
  • Reconstruct pavement
  • Repaint crosswalks
  • Add pedestrian lighting
  • Plant new trees
  • We will also update the bus stop by -
    • Adding new seating
    • Installing real-time bus arrival information sign

What about traffic and parking?

Businesses in the neighborhood asked to keep two-way traffic so people driving can continue to go north and south. The updated design, makes room for this request by:

  • Shifting parking on the east side of 3rd Ave S (in front of the art galleries and opposite the bus stop) to S Washington St and S Main St where buses currently park when they are not operating. People will also be able to use these locations for loading.
  • At the corner of 3rd Ave S at S Washington St, in front of the Pioneer Square Clinic, there will be a large space for dropping off and picking up people.

Why are we making these changes? (Project Background)

The bus stop on 3rd Ave S and S Main St lacks design features to accommodate the many riders it serves, including those in wheelchairs. The street is in poor condition. Several potholes and significant buckling make bus rides and car trips bumpy and uncomfortable. Our project will help resolve much of this discomfort.

The bus stop at 3rd Ave S and S Main St is the 10th busiest stop for King County Metro. Up to 2,600 people use it during weekdays. With this volume of people commuting to this location, the bus stop itself requires updates. The sidewalks are narrow. There is little to no separation from the adjacent parking lot. Lighting is limited, there is no seating for passengers waiting, and no electrical power. Our project resolves these issues, while also making the area more inviting and safe.

Finally, the changes support 3rd Avenue bus access to the many destinations throughout the Center City from Denny Way to S Jackson St from Belltown and Pioneer Square. Before COVID-19, more than 100,000 people rode buses along this street every day and bus use continues to rebound. Upgrading stations along the street, adding murals, and activating public spaces continue to be a priority for Mayor Bruce Harrell as we work together to create a new vision for the heart of the city

When are we making these improvements? (Project Schedule)
