Delridge Neighborhood Greenway Safe Connections

Thank you to all who participated in the community prioritization process for this Neighborhood Street Fund project. We completed this community-requested project in 2022! 

Project Overview

This project is a combination of two community proposals to enhance the connection between the Delridge Neighborhood Greenway and the West Seattle Bridge Trail:

• Improvements to SW Andover St between 26^th Ave SW (Delridge Neighborhood Greenway) and Delridge Way SW, as well as the intersection of SW Andover St & Delridge Way SW. These include protected bike lanes, green pavement markings, a new left turn pocket for people riding bikes, right turn on red restrictions, and other changes. This work is expected to be completed in 2022.

• A new railing on the onramp from the Delridge Way SW to the West Seattle Bridge. This on-ramp hosts a multiuse trail that links to the West Seattle Bridge Trail, but it currently lacks a railing between the trail and traffic using the onramp. The on-ramp is closed to traffic at the moment due to the closure of the West Seattle bridge, and so building the project now reduces construction impacts and prepares for the bridge's reopening. This project will include a new railing, trimming overgrown plants to increase the usable width of the trail, and spot pavement repairs. This work is expected to be completed in 2021.

• New crossing markings and signage to improve the visibility of trail users passing through the 23^rd Ave SW and Delridge Way SW intersection just south of the proposed railing. This work is already complete.

Benefits

• Enhance safety - Enhancements to SW Andover St will make travel more predictable and separate people biking from traffic. Installing the railing leading to the West Seattle Bridge Trail will further separate people walking and biking from traffic at a narrow point in the trail. These safety improvements help us make progress towards our Vision Zero goals of eliminating traffic fatalities and makes walking, biking, and taking transit more attractive and comfortable.
• Strengthen connections - The route being improved by this project lies between two popular existing facilities - the Delridge Neighborhood Greenway and the West Seattle Bridge Trail. Improving the route between the two makes both facilities more useful to more people, even more important with the closure of the West Seattle Bridge.

Schedule

The NSF program runs on 3-year cycles to select, design, and build projects. The application phase for the 2019-2021 cycle opened October 2018 and projects will be constructed in 2021.

Project Background

This is one of 15 Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by neighbors and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
