7th Ave Mobility Improvements
Overview
The 7th Ave mobility improvements are complete! The protected bike lane on 7th Ave from Virginia St to Pike St opened in May 2018. With this recent extension, the protected bike lane connects South Lake Union to Capitol Hill through downtown on a route that's comfortable for people of all ages and abilities.
This project also added curb bulbs at intersections along 7th Ave to shorten pedestrian crossings, and upgraded traffic signals and converted the contraflow lane between Olive Way and Pine St from northbound to southbound to improve circulation.
Developer Christian Gunter explains why protected bike lanes and other transportation infrastructure are important for a growing city.

Why 7th Ave?
The project began as part of the Center City Bike Network project to study downtown streets and determine which would be the best fit for protected bike lanes.
7th Ave was selected because it extends the existing 7th Ave protected bike lane and serves as an intuitive connection between South Lake Union and Capitol Hill. The route also has relatively low vehicle traffic volumes compared with other downtown streets and doesn’t serve transit riders. In addition, the conversion of 1 block from 2-way to 1-way provides an opportunity to improve traffic flow.
Extending the 7th Ave protected bike lane is part of the City’s Vision Zero plan to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
