Apprenticeship Program

Overview

Apprenticeship is a system of education and training using a planned, closely supervised combination of hands-on, on-the-job training, and academic classroom-style education. Apprentices are paid in “pay steps” every six months while they learn progressively more demanding components of their craft. This helps apprentice’s graduate into becoming qualified “journey-level” workers when they successfully complete their training program.

Our apprenticeship program is open to all candidates who meet our stringent qualifications. It's our goal that our apprentices reflect the diversity in the City's population. We are dedicated to increasing the number of women and minorities in our apprenticeships while providing opportunity for all qualified applicants.

We committed to training people in the traffic signal industry. If you're at least 18 years old, looking for a challenging career, and have the right combination of education, skills, and physical abilities, you could be eligible for the our Apprenticeship Program.

You can prepare for apprenticeship by maintaining or refreshing your math skills, increasing your knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical reasoning skills, and improve your physical fitness level.

Our apprenticeship program is approved, registered, and monitored by the State of Washington Labor and Industries Apprenticeship and Training Council. The Washington State Apprenticeship Training Standards are carefully overseen by the City of Seattle Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) and Apprenticeship Sub-Committees, which consist of experienced journey-level workers, SDOT Apprenticeship Coordinators, and management personnel. In addition, apprentices at Seattle Department of Transportation are required to join IBEW Local 77.

Requirements

• You must be a U.S. citizen or have legal permission to be employed in the United States
• You must be at least 18 years of age by the time of hire
• You must have a High School Diploma, Vocational School Graduation, or General Education Diploma (GED)
• You must have a valid Washington State Driver's License by the time of hire
• You must submit a Current Complete Driver's Record from the Department of Licensing
• You must be able to provide the documentation necessary to prove you meet these conditions
