Queen Anne Community Center Renovation

Updated: February 3, 2025

Early 2025

The next 6-year Park District Cycle Offers Exciting Improvements for Queen Anne Community. We have delayed the previously planned stabilization project, as new plans are made to incorporate the additional funding. The renovation will focus on decarbonization/electrification of the building, infrastructure improvements, and a general ‘refreshing’ to make the building feel new again.

Additional outreach occurred in 2024 that included meeting with community center staff, the Queen Anne CC advisory council, childcare staff, and community surveys to refine the design goals. This outreach concluded with the below goals for the community center.  We hope to refine these goals as the design progresses and additional outreach is conducted.

  • Up-to-date systems - lighting, plumbing, heating, and cooling systems that meet current codes, are significantly more efficient than current systems and require less maintenance.
  • Robust security systems that allow quick communications throughout the building, and if needed, quick and easy lock-down of entrances and exits for security purposes.
  • Networking systems throughout the building to support internet access for meetings, classes, etc., and for disaster communications.
  • Modern and accessible restrooms and kitchen space.
  • Overall accessibility in the community center for all
  • Maximum flexibility through moveable partitions to accommodate a wide variety of space sizes and uses.
  • A welcoming lobby with good sight lines for staff that can be easily secured in an emergency for safety.
  • Mechanical rooms that are easily accessible for maintenance but located do not impact the amount of useable public space.
  • Relocating childcare activities to the second floor.
  • Additional vertical spaces where possible to maximize available public space.
  • Open and light spaces that are welcoming.
  • Large spaces for the after-school program with restrooms and kitchen facilities.
  • Medium multi-purpose space for senior programs near the main building kitchen.
  • Medium space for teen activities.
  • New pottery/art room with sinks.
  • Room for weights and other exercise equipment.
  • Small locker rooms.
  • Gender-neutral restrooms.
  • Flexible spaces for small to medium meetings for community organizations
  • Small flexible space for Community Police and Seattle Neighborhood representatives.
  • Reclaim unusable spaces including hallways and old locker rooms.

Funding for the new work includes $2M for planning available in 2023 plus $16.9M for design and development available in 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin once the design is completed, and permits are obtained.

The design team is currently refining design concepts for review with the expectation that these will be presented to the public this fall.
