About Us

Overview

Welcome to the Seattle Human Services Department (HSD), where we partner with community-based organizations and service providers to transform the way support and resources are delivered to those in need. The principles of the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond guide our work as we seek to eliminate racial disparities and promote equity for all. We are committed to the ambitious goal that people of color should not experience disparities.

We employ about 400 dedicated professionals and have an annual budget of around $300 million. Our three core functions are the driving force behind our mission to improve the lives of Seattle residents:

  1. Funding the largest contribution to Seattle's safety net: We invest in community organizations and programs that support strong and healthy communities.
  2. Convening policymakers and thought leaders: We bring together leaders from various sectors and communities to engage in dialogue, share best practices, and develop solutions to complex human service challenges.
  3. Providing direct services: We provide direct services to the community through programs and services that empower individuals and communities to reach their full potential.

While these core functions drive our mission forward, we also have four key divisions that work together to deliver on our promise to Seattle residents:

  • Aging and Disability Services (ADS) provides support and services for seniors and people with disabilities, including serving as the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for Seattle and King County.
  • Leadership and Administrative Division (LAD) provides the leadership, administrative support, and financial management that help the department run smoothly.
  • Safe and Thriving Communities (STC) invests in efforts to end homelessness and promote public safety in the community.
  • Youth and Family Empowerment (YFE) invests in the growth and development of youth and families through programs and services.

Each grouping of staff is designed to work in partnership with providers and stakeholders throughout the community on a specific issue area to effectively steward public dollars. We accomplish this together by investing in strategies, programs, and services that work for the community, promote innovation in service delivery, and advance racial equity.
