Medallion Renewal

The 2022 medallion renewal period begins April 4, 2022 and ends June 30, 2022. Late renewal fees will be waived during the two week grace period ending July 15, 2022. This waiver only applies for new renewals (those which expire June 30, 2023). Late medallion renewal fees still apply for previous renewal seasons. Renewed medallions expire June 30, 2023. Please read the information below carefully, as we have made changes to our medallion renewal processes.

How to Renew

Medallion renewals should be completed on-line using theSeattle Services PortalMedallion owners needing assistance from a City of Seattle Regulatory Licensing Customer Service Representative (CSR) may email taxicab@seattle.gov. To ensure a quick response, please include a picture of your vehicle registration and write your medallion number in the subject line of the email.  Medallion owners may also call (206) 386-1268 between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If leaving a phone message, please leave your name, medallion number, and return phone number.

Medallion Holders Who Need Assistance

Please prepare for your call ahead of time by making sure:

  • You have an email address and your ID (driver's license or passport) is available (this will be verified over the telephone) if you have not already created a Seattle Services Portal account.
  • A picture of the vehicle registration has been emailed to taxicab@seattle.gov.
  • The vehicle associated with the medallion passed a safety inspection in 2021. (This does not need to be sent in, we will verify the inspection.)
  • Vehicles with a rebuilt title that has never been in taxi or for-hire service, have had an additional frame and airbag inspection.
  • Your insurance broker has sent your active insurance policy/binder to vehicleinsurance@seattle.gov.
  • All your fees and fines are paid in full, such as your business license fee, any notice of violation fines, no-show meter inspection test fees, etc.

Medallion Transfer

Transfers cannot be completed using the Seattle Services Portal.

Transfers require the voluntary medallion transfer form to be completed and emailed to taxicab@seattle.gov. There is no transfer fee when a transfer takes place during the medallion renewal process. However, before a medallion can be transferred, all outstanding wheelchair-accessible services fees must be paid. 

Medallion Holders with Inactive Medallions

Medallions which will remain deposited (on hold) may be renewed now or wait until they are active again. If they remain inactive, they do not require a vehicle safety inspection, an active insurance policy or a vehicle registration. Deposited/inactive medallions are not required to be affiliated with a Taxicab Association or For Hire company.

Medallion Renewal Fees

The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) has extended rule (FOR-HIRE-TRANSPORTATION-2021-02) to reduce the City's medallion and related fees for the 2023 medallion year (beginning April 4, 2022 and ending June 30, 2022).  The rule:

  1. Reduces the annual medallion (license) fee from $500 to $300,
  2. Reduces the late fee (medallion (license) renewal) from $60 to $30,
  3. Reduces the change of vehicle medallion owner (licensee) July - December fee from $500 to $300,
  4. Reduces the change of vehicle medallion owner (licensee) January - June (half year) fee from $250 to $150,
  5. Reduces the taxicab association annual fee from $1,000 to $100, and
  6. Reduces the for-hire driver's annual license fee from $50 to $25.

Wheelchair Accessible Services Fees

The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) has extended rule (FOR-HIRE-TRANSPORTATION-2021-03) to reduce the annual estimated Wheelchair Accessible Services (WAS) surcharge by 80 percent for the period beginning April 1, 2022 (paid during the medallion renewal process for the 2023 licensing year). The rule:

  1. Reduces the estimated WAS Surcharge for City-only and dual (City and County) taxi medallions from $145 to $29 per year, and
  2. Reduces the estimated WAS Surcharge for County-only taxi medallions and all for-hire vehicle medallions from $85 to $17 per year.

Temporary Suspension of Taxi and For-Hire Vehicle Age Limit

The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) will not enforce the City's taxi and for-hire 10-year vehicle age limit until the vehicle medallion is renewed in calendar year 2024.

Frequently asked questions

The renewal of your taxicab or for-hire vehicle license will be denied.  No transactions involving that medallion shall be accepted.

Yes. You will be able to do this once you receive your permanent medallion certificate. Director's Rule CPU-02-2015 describes the voluntary transfer process.

No. Your medallion is intangible property that gives the medallion owner the right to operate a taxicab or for-hire vehicle bearing that medallion number. You can change the vehicle operating under a medallion without affecting that medallion.
