One Less Car Challenge Eligibility Requirements

We wish we could invite everyone who has gotten rid of a car to take part in the Challenge, but of course we have to match the program to our resources and make sure we’re meeting our goals to reduce driving.

If it turns out you’re not eligible for the One Less Car Challenge, don’t despair! You’ll get the chance to learn about future Way to Go, Seattle programs to encourage less driving for which you may be eligible.

During the online application process you’ll be asked to indicate if you meet each eligibility requirement. Please be aware that sign-off is provisional and a final determination of eligibility will come later in the process when we’ve reviewed your application and other required items.

Level 1 Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, all of the following must apply to you.

The definition of “vehicle” for the One Less Car Challenge is any gas-powered car, truck, SUV, or motorcycle/scooter.

  • I’m a resident of Seattle.
  • Once I’ve set aside a vehicle to participate in Level 1 for a month, my household will have more licensed drivers than the number of other vehicles it owns or has regular access to (if any).
  • I understand that the vehicle I'm separating from during my month of participation must be currently running, operable, registered and insured; and is being driven currently and regularly by a member(s) of the household.
  • I must participate in Level 1 during a typical month; one in which I am available and in town for all or a large majority of the month and would have been driving my typical amount.
  • I pledge that the vehicle I’ve chosen to separate from will NOT be driven by anyone in my household for the month. (You are allowed to drive in all emergency situations, and briefly if your car is parked on the street in order to obey the City’s 72-hour rule.)
  • If I or anyone in my household drives the vehicle (except in an emergency situation), I will no longer be eligible and will forfeit my Level 1 incentives.
  • I understand that I will be required to provide the VIN number, odometer reading and license plate number of the vehicle I won’t be driving no later than the 5 th day of the month in which I participate.

Level 2 Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, all of the following must apply to you.

The definition of “vehicle” for the One Less Car Challenge is any gas-powered car, truck, SUV, or motorcycle/scooter.

  • I’m a resident of Seattle. If the vehicle is already gone, it was sold/donated while I was a resident of Seattle.
  • If my vehicle is already gone, it was sold or donated less than two months prior to the day I’m signing up for Level 2 of the program.
  • I agree not to replace the vehicle that is being sold or donated for one year.
  • After selling or donating a vehicle, my household will have more licensed drivers than the number of vehicles it owns or has regular access to.
  • The vehicle being sold or donated must have been driven by a member(s) of my household at least 3,000 miles in the last year.
  • The vehicle being sold or donated must be an operating vehicle that a member of my household has owned for at least one year.
Please note:If your vehicle was recently stolen, totaled in an accident, or has broken down and a decision has been made not to replace it, this is acceptable provided your household meets all the eligibility requirements.
