Thornton Creek Watershed Characterization Report
This Thornton Creek Watershed Characterization Report presents background information about the Thornton Creek watershed. It is the first step in developing a Watershed Action Plan that will guide actions by government agencies, citizens and businesses to:
- • Reduce non-point source pollution
- • Protect biological resources
- • Preserve, enhance and restore fish and wildlife habitat
What's in this report?
The Thornton Creek Watershed Management Committee and SPU Resource Planning staff, have been developing the Thornton Creek Watershed Characterization Report since 1997 under a loan from the Department of Ecology as one of two key documents of the Thornton Creek Watershed Action Plan project.
This report is the most comprehensive effort to date documenting the character of the Thornton Creek Watershed, and supports creation of the pending watershed action plan, the second document. The report contains over 250 pages of background information on the watershed, historical accounts, maps and scientific data. We encourage you to read the foreword and executive summary as an introduction to watershed issues. The Characterization Report is one resource used to develop the second important piece of the action planning process, the watershed action plan, now near a final draft.
The Watershed Management Committee and SPU are working on the next steps to complete a draft action plan. The action plan outlines approximately ninety recommendations, written by a watershed stakeholder group, to address watershed issues including stormwater, non-point pollution, wildlife habitat, environmental education, and creek monitoring.
