ABOUT THE PARK

Ella Bailey Park is one of the newest parks in Seattle. Opened in 2007, the park is the former playground for the adjacent former Magnolia Elementary School. Since the school’s closure, the blacktop playground had fallen into disrepair with weeds growing through cracks.

With nearly $1.4 million from the Pro Parks Levy, Seattle Parks and Recreation – in partnership with neighbors – renovated the space into a beautiful community playground with gently rolling slopes, play equipment, picnic tables, barbeques and walking pathways. With its panoramic views of Mt. Rainier and downtown Seattle, the park is one now of the most popular destinations for viewing Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve fireworks.

HISTORY

The park gets its name from the former owner of the property. In 1929, teacher Ella Bailey sold the property to the City of Seattle for use as a park for $2,350. This generous act created open space for generations of Seattle’s children.
