Public discussion on predatory lending
marks Fair Housing Month
Local TV ad campaign asks people to report discrimination
The secret world of mortgage lending practices is the focus of a sack lunch discussion
entitled, "Danger! Your home may be at risk!" on Wednesday, April 24 from
noon to 1 p.m. in Seattle City Council Chambers.
Sponsored by Councilmember Nick Licata, the Seattle Office for Civil Rights and Seattle
Office of Housing, the discussion will focus on how to decipher the fine print of mortgage
documents, how to spot spurious charges and fees, and how to guard against predatory
lenders.
Participants also will learn about organized efforts to eliminate predatory lending
practices in Seattle and throughout Puget Sound. The event will be carried on
Seattles CATV station.
In honor of national Fair Housing Month in April, the Seattle Office for Civil Rights
also will unveil a pair of 30-second public service announcements on local television
stations in late April. The announcements dramatize common discrimination scenarios and
explain, "Discrimination doesnt always look like this, but it does
always hurt. Call the Seattle Office for Civil Rights at 684-4500." The ads will air
on KOMO 4, KING 5, and KIRO 7.
