Standing for a Livable Seattle

I have demonstrated the combination of leadership skills and commitment to community activism needed on the City Council. As a member of the Queen Anne Community Council, I spearheaded the effort that prevented massive expansion of the TV broadcast towers. Throughout my 18 year career as a private sector safety consultant (protecting workers from industrial accidents), I have honed the leadership skills that will serve you well: communicating effectively with diverse groups, consensus-building, and creating workable solutions to complex problems.

As the father of three school age sons, I am committed to education, and to preserving our environment for future generations.

I will provide strong leadership - not micromanagement - to address the problems that challenge us, and the issues that threaten our shared quality of life:

  • Neighborhood Livability.

Seattle's strong economy and vibrant neighborhoods have always supported each other. For this to continue, our neighborhoods - downtown included - must be protected from shoddy planning and excessive traffic. Parks, libraries, and community centers, which are basic to our quality of life, must be given more importance in the planning and development process, and existing parks should be protected from development. I will work to improve the livability of our neighborhoods, and to plan for adequate community facilities - without introducing new taxes or impeding the growth of our economy.

  • Transportation.

The proposed Sound Transit alignment does not address access between Seattle's communities. I will help move the monorail and other off-street transit options forward.

  • Public Safety.

Our police and firefighters risk their lives to protect our safety. We must continue to have quick, effective response to emergency calls, and we must ensure public confidence in our public safety agencies. I support strong civilian oversight of our police and fire departments.

  • Education.

Providing access to a first-class education is a responsibility we have to every child in this city. The school district is moving in the right direction, but it needs more support. I will work to make city resources available for the district's mission.

  • Government Access.

People across Seattle devote themselves to bettering our community, yet are sometimes not represented when important decisions are made. I will continue to work to insure that all residents - not just a privileged few - have a voice at the table.

On September 14, vote for a better Seattle - vote for Andrew Scully.
