Seattle is the most vibrant city in America today. Look around you. What do you see? Robust economy. Crime down. New initiatives for arts and the environment. A sense that Seattle is moving in the right direction. It's no accident. For the past eight years, my job has been to make Seattle a good place to live. For two terms I've demonstrated thoughtful, fair and effective leadership. I don't get headlines; I just get things done. Affordability. While others complain about housing costs, I'm working on your cost of living that's really within City control — your utility rates. I fought "energy deregulation" because I realized it would mean higher costs for most of you. Result: the deregulation bandwagon has slowed to a manageable pace for thoughtful discourse. Safety. While others talked about gun control, I organized Seattle's first gun buyback and trigger-lock campaign. We sent "Cops and Docs" into Seattle schools to give kids the straight facts about the deadly danger of firearms. Result: safer schools, lives saved. Environment. I'm ensuring your city government is doing its part. I'm Seattle's leader on salmon recovery. I preserved Seattle's pristine watershed, launched the City's response to global warming, increased our water conservation, and have all the city agencies committed to slashing use of toxic chemicals and pesticides. Result: no fanfare, just solid performance. Downtown and the Neighborhoods. Six years ago Seattle's downtown was a dead and dangerous place after 6 p.m. Today downtown is a neighborhood — a vibrant, successful heart of the city. It took a gutsy combination of zoning, police strategies, civility laws, and business investments to accomplish this. Look around downtown in the evening. Result: Downtown is generating civic revenues to pay for improvements in all Seattle neighborhoods. Infrastructure. While others complain about Seattle's potholes and crumbling infrastructure, I'm spearheading investments in stormwater drainage citywide, doubling the replacement rate for aging waterpipes, and driving an upgrade of power lines and streetlights. I reorganized the City's response to landslides. Result: a smoothly running city! In addition (in my spare time) I serve on the State Board of Health and chair the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. I work hard. I get things done. But the work isn't finished. Solid leadership will be more important than ever on this new City Council. That's why I'm asking again for your vote, and I thank you for it. |
