The reason for my candidacy is simple, I have a firm belief that the strength and diversity of our neighborhoods is what creates the urban community within the boundaries of Seattle and I want this to continue. I am running as an independent candidate although, I do belong to an organized labor union. As a council member my views and support of policy issues will be based on the good of the whole not special interests. If elected to the city council I have no doubt that I would earn your trust by actions, not just descriptive words. Values and beliefs lead the direction of my life where the arts, sciences, a healthy environment for families and social justice represent a few core values. I do not support nor do I believe in overpriced sports palaces. I do believe the investment in Seattle's infrastructure; for example, water, waste treatment and electrical distribution should be promoted and maintained as public utilities for the continued quality of life they provide.
The time has arrived where the secretive institutional nature of city governance must change. As a council member I would welcome open public participation and review.
The time has arrived where we must admit that affordable single family homes no longer exist for low to medium income families in Seattle. My proposal:
That we form an affordable housing trust where sale of city owned homes to qualified families would take place as they become available. Return these properties to the tax roles, allow a family the pride of home ownership.
The time has arrived where internal review procedures by our public safety departments include citizen oversight committees.
The time has arrived where the Seattle city council should accept responsibility for the actions of the department of construction and land use. Redesignation of single family zones to out of scale multiple family structures, the creation of view corridors that should be referred to as view slivers is wrong and those responsible should be held accountable.
The time has arrived where reforestation and land acquisition within the Cedar and Tolt watersheds is less expensive than operation of a thirty million dollar sedimentation plant.
In closing, I ask for your trust I ask for your vote. The wealth of our community includes each of us and it would be my honor to serve you as a member of the Seattle city council.
Thank you.
