Jim Compton. Values We Can Trust.

For 30 years Jim Compton has asked the questions you'd ask … of elected officials, of the criminal justice system, of bureaucrats, of environmental polluters. He has fought for information and solutions to make your life better, and never lost his optimism about public life.

A veteran national and international reporter and award-winning producer of King 5's Compton Report, Jim has spent his career on the front lines of civic discourse. His documentaries sparked action to clean up Puget Sound, warned us of threatened salmon runs, and helped us rethink health care. With the League of Women Voters, he produced key debates among candidates running for office. He investigated the ethics of judges.

Now, we need him in City Hall.

Jim Compton asks good questions. Relevant, focused questions. And he listens. Carefully. His values are your values. His ethics, beyond reproach.

  • He'll work to get traffic moving again - without turning neighborhoods sour on transportation improvements.
  • Jim will fight to make sure success does not spoil Seattle. In an era of economic vitality, we must be sure that no one is left behind. We must deliver on our commitment to affordable housing.
  • As a lifelong champion of public education, Jim wants safe schools with interesting, challenging curriculum that gets kids ready for the 21st Century.
  • He intends to restore a sense of focus to City Hall. We must find a crisper, more common sense approach to decision making, and stop endless meetings, inconclusive process and delays.
Jim Compton, 58, is a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest:

  • Graduate of Portland's Reed College.
  • Worked in US Merchant Marine.
  • Fulbright Scholar to Romania.
  • NBC Fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
  • NBC Foreign Correspondent in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Correspondent, PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.
  • Board of Trustees, Reed College.
  • Active supporter and fundraiser for Seattle Folklife Festival.
  • Lecturer at dozens of high school and college classes.
  • Edited newspapers, climed mountains, worked as a carpenter.
  • Member, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. retired Member, Sailors Union of the Pacific.

Among Endorsements:

City Council President Sue Donaldson
Former City Councilman Paul Kraabel
Professor Hubert Locke
Folklife President Irene Namkung
