Charlie Chong came from Seattle's grassroots to win a City Council seat in 1996 by a landslide. He won without the endorsements of the daily newspapers or the political and downtown business establishment.
Charlie won with a "back to basics" platform - to repair streets, maintain parks, assure public safety, manage growth more intelligently, preserve affordable housing, and not tax seniors, young families and renters out of the city.
He won by advocating for neighborhood needs and for environmental preservation. He had helped begin restoration of green spaces, and served 3 years on the Seattle Open Space Committee.
Late in 1996, he was the first Councilmember to tell the Mariners the City Council wouldn't give them more money. He got more potholes fixed. He told downtown business groups to stop expecting public subsidies and get financing the old-fashioned way - at the banks. In many ways, he wrote the political agenda for later Council candidates.
Why do so many people want Charlie back on the Council? The PacMed deal, Convention Center expansion, and view-blocking waterfront hotel proposals might have been modified or stopped had Charlie and more new members been on the Council. Seattle voters now have a real chance to finish the changes Charlie began in 1996.
Traffic, transportation and affordable housing are the immediate issues facing Seattle. Charlie believes that Sound Transit has lost neighborhood support, and could be another multi-billion dollar disaster like WPPSS. We need to stop, look, and listen and be open to changes for a truly regional transit system - we only have one chance to get it right.
In Seattle, affordable housing is disappearing as older buildings are replaced by expensive new developments. Charlie would use the state Growth Management Act to regulate growth based on road and bridge capacities, something the City ignores for "damn the traffic, full speed ahead" development.
What else is Charlie for? Government respect for citizens. Common sense policies and financing. Honest disclosure. Constitutional rights and social justice. Preservation of our environment, parks and green spaces, and historic landmarks.
Charlie wants to lighten up our city - make it less hostile to young people, musicians and artists, the poor and homeless. Allow legal posters on poles and teen dances.
To do this, Charlie needs more than your support - he needs your vote. Please remember to vote for Charlie Chong for Seattle City Council Position 7.
