By amending the Seattle City Charter, we clarify certain
sections, delete or change certain provisions that have become obsolete
or eclipsed by state law, and bring provisions into line with the
present needs and expectations of the citizens and officials of
Seattle. Proposition 2 makes all exclusively male gender references
neutral, to more accurately reflect the makeup of the City's
workforce. This change does not represent a major shift in authority or
policy as currently embodied in the charter. Instead, the amendment
prepares the City for the new millennium.

Rebuttal to Statement For
The fact that we have had many female City Council
members underscores our argument that it has been universally
understood that in the City Charter, as in many other documents, "he" is not
a gender specific term. Turning everything into "he/she" and
"her/him" wastes time and needlessly interrupts the flow of language.
Council members who just don't understand this common
knowledge can be educated with the insertion of one sentence into
the Charter "It is understood that, where applicable, he means
she and vice versa." The fact that the Seattle City Council would
waste time on this indicates that they are unable to identify items of
importance. Vote NO on Proposition 2.
