NEW IDEAS FOR TODAY'S SEATTLE
More than anything, people ask me
"Charlie, can you do something about this traffic?"
One immediate fix is to have more traffic cops working at the bottlenecks. Another is
better-synchronized traffic lights. In the long term,
we need an integrated system of electric trolleys and monorails or
underground rail to provide a realistic alternative to driving.
I believe the City needs to stop the
loss of existing affordable housing. We need to protect affordable neighborhoods
by changing zoning standards so we don't end up with mega-houses affordable only to
the rich. To save affordable apartments, we need a moratorium on demolitions.
I would restore City Council
responsibilities that were delegated to the Department
of Construction and Land Use and share decision-making on land use and on
design with neighborhoods and citizens. By including neighborhoods and residents
honestly and effectively in Council decisions, we would best preserve neighborhood
character, and protect neighborhoods from damage by transportation corridors,
inappropriate design and construction, and the loss
of public views.
A REAL TRACK RECORD
In 1996-1997, I was the
first Councilmember to oppose the Seattle Mariners' attempt to renege on
their agreement with the City to pay for game day police and clean-up costs - saving
taxpayers at least $20 million.
I strengthened the City's policies on sexual and other illegal harassment by
increasing supervisor responsibility and
accountability.
I co-sponsored the effort to widen the
520 study to include transit and other alternatives to bridge expansion.
