These are uncertain times for both the city and the nation. We face terrorism at home and abroad. We face layoffs by Boeing. We worry about national security and personal safety.
This city and its people will play a role in the national struggle, but we will not let a war with terrorism stop us from making progress on problems at home: traffic congestion, the gulf between police and minorities, working with Boeing to
keep jobs here, and declining tax revenues that will force hard budget choices.
Voters in Seattle must decide which candidate is best suited to keep the city safe, unified and thriving.
I believe in the Seattle Way--bringing people together to find common sense solutions.
United, we are stronger. Division weakens our resolve and the ability to meet the challenges ahead.
Our city cannot rise to those challenges if a substantial number of our citizens feel left behind or treated unjustly. What do I mean by the Seattle Way? I mean that:
We make hard choices without being harsh.
We work towards policies that bring us together, not drive us apart.
We define civility as promoting respect, not fear.
We provide real solutions, not empty criticism.
We stay true to our principles and not flip-flop on important issues because it is politically convenient.
We follow, not fight, the public's directive to build the monorail.
We fix Sound Transit, not renew a 30-year debate. We build light rail, not abandon our only realistic hope of relieving traffic congestion.
As a Metro-King County councilmember representing West Seattle, I built a record of effective leadership. I led a coalition that found a humane way to cut the county's budget and keep taxes low. I worked with city and regional officials to improve transit, promote parks and open space, create partnerships with our schools, and strengthen public safety and health programs. Now, more than ever, we need leadership that can unite us and get things done, not just tell clever jokes and score debate points.
Seattle does not need four years of quips and controversy. These are serious times that call for serious leadership.
We are a stronger, better community when we work together. That's how I will lead the city. I will get the job done.
Please vote for Greg Nickels for mayor.
