For twenty years, as a community activist and now a City Councilmember, I have worked hard to make Seattle a better place to live. As a Councilmember I've worked to strengthen our communities and help keep our city livable and affordable.
As we experience difficult times, Seattle needs fiscally responsible and effective leaders with the ability to work with a broad range of people and issues. My experience, integrity, and skills will help us achieve economic and social stability.
My highest priority is to keep Seattle a place we're all proud to call home. As Chair of the Neighborhoods Committee, I worked with hundreds of citizens to approve 38 neighborhood plans, including projects like West Seattle Junction sidewalks, the Greenwood Greenhouse Park, the library at MLK and Othello, and a Roosevelt community garden.
I've improved public safety for residents of Courtland Place in Southeast Seattle by securing lighting for a dark alley and converting a street end into a community garden. I've worked to promote jobs through more efficient development regulations. My negotiating skill has led to win-win solutions for water and energy conservation.
Building -- not just planning -- a better transportation system is also a priority. I helped create the FlexCar car-sharing program that reduces the need for more cars. I support transportation choices, including light rail, monorail, bike paths, sidewalks, and better road maintenance.
I value racial harmony and justice. I have been recognized for my work in finding unity in our diversity, by earning the highest rating for this position by Women in Unity. I've been an active promoter of the Forums on Race program.
Together we can meet future challenges and have efficient transit, a secure economy, excellent schools, a healthy environment, and thriving neighborhoods.
My wife Sue Ann and I have lived in Madrona since 1981 and our three children attended Seattle Public Schools. Thank you for the honor of serving as your Councilmember. I ask for your vote to continue my work for you and with you.
