The Beautification Committee was formed to work on
projects that enhance the appearance of our
neighborhood and by extension, our neighborhood
itself. We are a group of 10-15 that develop ideas and
suggestions that we feel would benefit our community. If there is approval and enough willingness, we do
the organizing to see that those ideas become reality.
One of our first efforts was helping with the planting
of 40 trees in the parking strips along Dearborn Ave.
We followed that success with the planting of 40 more
trees along Norman and 24th Streets. Three traffic
circles were constructed on Dearborn and two more will
be built this coming year.... one at Norman and 24th
Streets and another at Judkins and 26th Streets.
Plantings of trees, shrubs and perennials were
incorporated into the traffic circles, working with
the Dept. of Transportation and Dept. of Urban
Landscaping to insure that city guidelines were
adhered to. Once trees and plants are in the ground
they need to be watered and the grounds weeded.
Volunteers were sought and weeding gatherings
organized to see that the work would get done.
Currently we are very excited about a neighborhood art
project. At three different dates this summer,
neighbors will have the opportunity to paint tiles
that will then be placed on pavers and incorporated
into the traffic circles sometime this fall. The
committee has also applied for funding for a larger art project....the creation of a mural that will reflect our history and who we are as a community.
The beautification committee is open to ideas and anyone interested in working with us. We meet only as needed and there are usually snacks!

Traffic Circle Art
Everyone in the neighborhood is invited take part in a community art project aimed at adding our creative and personal touch to the new Dearborn traffic circles. The project will include painted ceramic tiles, an array of found objects and tiles with photographic images, all of which will be imbedded into a design within the traffic circles. Images and objects with themes that reflect what is important to residents as individuals and as members of a neighborhood are encouraged.
Work on the project will take place at August night out on 8/1 and during the Skills Survey Open House at Casuelitas on July 12 and 17. Installation of the artwork will happen on September 16. Stay posted for the details from the Beautification Committee and start thinking about what you’d like to contribute!
