ABOUT US

Colman Neighborhood Association is a group of 120+ active households between Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 23rd Ave. South, and between S. Jackson and Massachusetts Streets. We are here to build community and improve public safety and quality of life in our neighborhood. We try to represent all 400+ households within the Colman Neighborhood and welcome everyone to participate in any capacity.

We hold a several yearly events: a neighborhood-wide yard sale in the summer, Seattle Night Out on the first Tuesday in August, and an annual Town Meeting, where we make plans for the year. We conduct monthly litter patrols as Adopt-A-Street participants and hold meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.

Some highlights of our other activities:

In both 2004 and 2005 we planted 40 trees donated by the City of Seattle. We paid 25 youths from the neighborhood to work with us. Two grants from the Washington Insurance Council made it possible to pay the teens, and to pay for equipment rentals and supplies for these events. A great deal of volunteer labor, organizing, and food donations made each event a great success.

In 2004 we lobbied for and won inclusion in the Alcohol Impact Area zone. In 2006 we continue to participate in the city’s process to achieve mandatory compliance with the AIA. We are in the public hearing process now.

We petitioned the city in 2004 for three traffic circles for Dearborn; they were built in late 2005 and have subsequently been the focus of several community events to landscape and maintain them. We have also received funds to build traffic circles at 24th & Norman and 26th & Judkins in 2006. These are underway.

In January of 2005 we held our first retreat to talk about the upcoming year and how we might continue to build on our success. From that meeting several committees were born, including a Website Committee (coming soon!), a Beautification Committee, the Welcome Committee, and the Skills Directory Committee, whose work is coming to fruition vis-à-vis the surveys they are conducting to learn more about what each resident would like to offer in the way of skills and assets.

In 2006, after the Skills Directory (or Neighborhood Yellow Pages) is complete, we will be working to create a Disaster Preparation Plan for our neighborhood so that we can help each other if the need arises.

We are not a 501(c)3 organization. However, the Seattle Neighborhood Group acts as our fiscal agent and manages all monies donated to and spent by the association.
